A tech pack is the document that turns your design into something a manufacturer can build. Without one, even a great design becomes guesswork. What a tech pack actually is

A tech pack (technical package) is a comprehensive document that describes every detail of a handbag design. It's typically:

  • A multi-page PDF or shared document
  • Including sketches or technical drawings
  • With measurements, materials, hardware, and construction notes
  • Detailed enough that a skilled manufacturer can build it without seeing the original sample

For custom handbag manufacturing, the tech pack is the difference between "the manufacturer built what I wanted" and "the manufacturer built what they thought I wanted."

The essential components

Most purse tech packs include:

1. Cover page

  • Brand name
  • Style name
  • Style number
  • Season
  • Designer/contact info
  • Date

Simple, but establishes what the document is about.

2. Tech sketches or illustrations

Detailed drawings showing:

  • Front view
  • Back view
  • Side views
  • Top/bottom views (for structured bags)
  • Inside view (showing lining and pockets)
  • Detail views of hardware, stitching, special features

Sketches should be clean and clear, with dimensions and callouts. Reference images help too — if there's a competitor product or detail you admire, include it.

3. Materials bill of materials (BOM)

A complete list of materials:

  • Body material: Leather, vegan leather, canvas, nylon, with supplier and grade
  • Lining material: Same
  • Hardware: Zippers, clasps, D-rings, buckles, with sizes and finishes
  • Thread: Color, weight, type
  • Edge paint: Color and supplier
  • Reinforcement materials: Interfacing, batting, stiffeners
  • Other: Labels, tags, branded elements

A good BOM specifies suppliers when possible. A great BOM includes swatches or photos of each material.

4. Hardware specifications

For each piece of hardware:

  • Type and function
  • Size
  • Material (metal alloy, plating, etc.)
  • Finish (gold, silver, gunmetal, brushed, etc.)
  • Supplier reference

Hardware matters a lot for handbag perception. Generic hardware reads as cheap; specific hardware reads as intentional.

5. Stitching specifications

  • Stitch type (lock stitch, chain stitch, saddle stitch, etc.)
  • Stitch length (typically 8–10 stitches per inch for handbag construction)
  • Thread color
  • Stitch location (called out on sketches)

Stitching affects both function and aesthetic. Different construction methods have different strengths.

6. Measurements

  • Overall dimensions (width, height, depth)
  • Strap drop (for shoulder bags)
  • Handle drop (for top-handle bags)
  • Pocket dimensions
  • Panel dimensions

Measurements should be in both inches and centimeters. Most manufacturers work in centimeters; many brands think in inches. Both on the tech pack avoids confusion.

7. Construction notes

Detailed notes on how the bag is constructed:

  • Seam allowances
  • Edge finishing (painted, turned, bound)
  • Reinforcement locations
  • Specific techniques (rolled handles, French seams, etc.)
  • Anything that affects how the bag looks or feels

This section is where experienced designers add detail that prevents mistakes.

8. Quality standards

  • Acceptable defect rate
  • Specific QC criteria
  • Any items that must be perfect vs. items with tolerance

Quality standards help the manufacturer know what to focus on during production.

9. Packaging specs

  • Dust bag
  • Box (if applicable)
  • Tags and labels
  • Care card
  • Poly bag

Packaging often overlooked but matters for brand perception.

10. Reference images

Photos of:

  • The intended final product
  • Competitor products for context
  • Specific details (hardware, stitching, materials)
  • Anything that's hard to convey in sketches alone

References bridge the gap between drawing and reality.

How to evaluate a tech pack

A few questions that surface whether the tech pack is good:

  • Can a manufacturer build the bag from this document alone? If they need to ask many questions, the pack has gaps.
  • Are all materials specified? Vague descriptions like "premium leather" don't help; "Italian vegetable-tanned cowhide, 1.4mm, supplier X" does.
  • Are measurements complete and accurate? Missing or vague dimensions cause problems.
  • Are hardware specs specific? Generic descriptions cause inconsistencies.
  • Is construction clear? Sketches with callouts work better than just text.

A good tech pack is detailed enough that two different manufacturers reading it would produce similar bags.

Common mistakes in tech packs

Mistake 1: Sketches without dimensions

Sketches are necessary but not sufficient. Without measurements, a manufacturer has to guess — and guesses vary.

Mistake 2: Materials described too vaguely

"Leather" can mean a hundred different things. Specify type, grade, supplier, thickness, and finish.

Mistake 3: Hardware without finish

"Zipper" can mean many things. Specify type, size, finish, and pull style.

Mistake 4: Skipping construction notes

"Like the reference photo" assumes the manufacturer will infer everything from a photo. Construction notes fill in what photos can't show.

Mistake 5: Forgetting edge cases

Things that get forgotten:

  • Strap reinforcement
  • Hardware attachment method
  • Reinforcement at stress points
  • Lining attachment method
  • Closure mechanism details

A great tech pack covers the whole bag, not just the visible surfaces.

Tools and templates

A few useful tools:

  • Adobe Illustrator: Industry standard for tech sketches
  • Clo3D or similar 3D tools: Useful for visualizing before sampling
  • Google Sheets or Excel: For BOM and spec sheets

  • Send reference images. Especially for details that are hard to convey in sketches.
  • Keep the pack updated. As the design evolves through sampling, update the tech pack to match.

Tech pack quality matters more when:

  • You're producing at higher volumes — small misunderstandings compound at scale
  • You're working with a manufacturer in a different country — communication barriers amplify ambiguity
  • Your design has unique features — anything custom-built needs more specification
  • You're licensing the design to another brand — they need to produce without you
